![]() I think I also mentioned before but only Germanics get Holy Orders unreformed, and even then it is only ever by event. There's never any fear the HRE will breathe down your neck upon request of the Pope, or if he does that the AI would ever declare since you're now bigger than them.Īs for Pagans, being locked to Elective Gavelkind and mostly light infantry is a special kind of hell already. It might be a struggle if the Pope were to grant Invasion claims at will to threaten your realm, but in reality he will only ever grant them if the requester is smaller, and AI pretty much never declares on others if they are smaller. (On that note, non aggression pact not stopping factions should be the default rule, not an option.) Vassals may hate you but management is so easy it's not hard to tie up half your realm in non aggression pacts with just two children. Excommunication isn't even that bad either. At worst it's excommunication, and the fact he seems like he randomly does it to pious people sounds more like a developer problem than a balance one. You also make it sound like the Pope is actually a struggle, rather than a feature. With Shia too, sometimes the Assasin holy order event does not even fire (also the case with Jomsvikings,) so they get no holy order at all. And then Holy Fury came along with the new Holy Fury reconquista mechanics and de jure split of Andalusia (opens independence revolts.) In any case that's not nearly worth a 50,000 manpower disadvantage. ![]() ![]() (Ummayad is vulnerable in between empire formation and two kingdom period, where everyone in second kingdom hates him for having their kingdom.) Which was good. The adventurer and claimant factions it produces means Umayyad Hispania forming just before Holy Fury came out was roughly 50/50. Open is not necessarily the best these days from all the strong claims it dishes out. More importantly the non castle holdings don't have the cultural buildings that provide combat bonuses to retinues, further disincentivizing me to ever pick them over castles. I find people rarely actually hold temples. This way, many of the holy orders currently not present in the game as recruitable holy orders, such as the Order of Saint Lazarus and the Livonian Order, could be introduced to the game. Given that the Knights Templar were considered one of the larger holy orders, it probably would be fair to split the number of all Catholic holy orders by half. The only holy order for which I was able to find the most accurate number of knights was Knights Templar, which at its peak had 1,500-2,000 knights: in-game, they usually have twice that number. The Teutonic Order and the Livonian Order fielded less than a thousand knights during some battles of their early period of existence, and during some battles in the Levant, the holy orders fielded hundreds rather than thousands of knights, though these numbers might not indicate how many knights they were able to field in total. To be fair, the historical holy orders had significantly smaller number of active warriors than what is portrayed in-game. What do you think? They are not the knights that the Holy Land deserves but what the people need at this moment. A member of the order gets +30 opinion from other Catholics. If they get lands they focus more on building hospitals and churches than castles. They can not gather many soldiers, but their commanders do a lot of moral damage. ![]()
